Robert Emhardt, a portly actor who appeared on Broadway and in several television shows, died Dec. 26 at his home in Ojai, Calif. He was 80.
Emhardt studied acting at England’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He made his Broadway debut with Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne in “The Pirate” in 1942 and starred with Helen Hayes in “Harriet” and Lillian Gish in “The Curious Savage.”
He won the Critics Circle Award as best supporting actor of the 1948-49 season for his role in “Life With Mother.”

Emhardt appeared in more than 700 TV shows from the ’50s through the ’80s, including “Occasional Wife,” “Iron Horse,” “Alfred Hitchcock Presents,” “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” and “The Invaders.”
His film roles include Sidney Lumet’s 1966 “The Group,” in which he played Shirley Knight’s manic-depressive father. Other pic roles were “The Iron Mistress,” “The Big Knife,” “Underworld USA,” “Kid Galahad,” “Change of Habit,” “Scorpio,” “Alex and the Gypsy” and “Fraternity Row.”
He is survived by his wife, Silvia; daughters Alana, who works at Winkler & Daniels Prods., Janis and Mia; son Chris, who works at Paramount; and two granddaughters.
In lieu of flowers, family suggests donations to the Ojai Humane Society or the Livingston Memorial VNA Hospice.
