Sonic is selling mozzarella sticks for less than a dollar all day.

On Wednesday, the fast-food chain is slashing the price on four-piece orders of mozzarella sticks to 99 cents all day. Typically, a four-piece mozzarella stick would cost about $2.50.

There isn't much fine print or work you have to do to get the mozz sticks. The $0.99 price tag doesn't include tax, and the deal isn't applicable if you're trying to cash in on other promotions, but other than that, the 99 cent mozzarella sticks should be available until supplies run out.

In recent years, Sonic has balanced classics like its mozzarella sticks with new, quirkier flavors like the pickle juice slush.

One reason for the increasingly adventurous menu is what Uehlein calls the "Costco factor."

"You walk into Costco, and you can basically have your lunch there," Uehlein said. The abundance of free samples are geared toward convincing people to buy things that they may not have otherwise added to their shopping carts.

Sonic had adapted that strategy to the fast-food chain's own needs.

"Five years ago, I might have had to put out tiny little taste cups and tell people 'try the pickle juice slush,'" Uehlein said. "Now, we can sell it at happy hour, so you can try it for not a lot of money."

Still, the 99 cent mozzarella sticks prove that Sonic's deal strategy can also apply to some old classics.
